Solids seperation

For catalytic deferrisation / demanganisation to a concentration of 8 mg / liter in water Prantner recommends the filter material pyrolusite. Pyrolusite acts as an insoluble catalyst and accelerates the reaction between dissolved oxygen and iron compounds.

Pyrolusite acts as a catalyst between oxygen and soluble iron compounds and produces iron hydroxide which precipitates out and is easily filtered. Because of its physical properties Pyrolusite is an excellent filter material that simply needs to be cleaned by periodically back-flushing the unit. After the material has been flushed it is once again ready to use.Because pyrolusite is not used up during the deferrisation it offers an economic advantage compared to other deferrisation-materials. Further advantages are that there is very little material lost due to abrasion, use in a wide temperature range and also that no chemicals are required to regenerate it.

Pyrolusite can be used as a filter material for demanganisation with the same confidence as it is for deferrisation. For concentrations that exceed 8 mg/l we recommend precipition/ flocculation systems (see below).
