Scrubber
Exhaust air scrubber (counterflow type)
Counterflow Scrubber
Prantner counterflow scrubbers are designed as vertical columns. They are available with either random packing or structured packing. The material is selected to meet the specific requirements of the process. The preferred materials are PE/PP plastics or 1.4301 stainless steel. The packing ensures a large surface area for optimal mass transfer with minimal pressure drop. After mass transfer has taken place, the cleaned exhaust air is freed of entrained liquid droplets by a droplet separator and exits the system via the exhaust outlet.
The scrubbers can be operated in a continuous flow or recirculating mode. In the continuous flow process, fresh scrubbing liquid is continuously supplied, whereas in the recirculating process, the scrubbing liquid is recirculated using a centrifugal pump.
The continuous flow process is used for the absorption of volatile, water-soluble substances, such as alcohols. The recirculating process is primarily used in chemisorption processes. Here, the air pollutants react with a chemical in the scrubbing liquid (e.g., the reaction of ammonia (NH3) with sulfuric acid (H2SO4) to form ammonium sulfate ((NH4)2SO4)). The resulting product is water-soluble and accumulates in the wash liquid. Based on time or concentration, a portion of the wash liquid is discharged and replaced with fresh wash liquid.
